New IT Law: Simpler Filing, Digital Tools & Faster Refunds

New Income Tax Law to Simplify Filing and Speed Up Refunds

In India, the new Income-tax Act is scheduled to come into effect on April 1, 2026. The legislation is designed to simplify tax compliance for taxpayers, reduce tax-related litigation, and promote a more transparent, technology-driven tax ecosystem. These reforms align with the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall tax administration system.

During a recent address in Pune, Vivek Wadekar highlighted concerns surrounding the Income-tax Act, 1961. He stated that the Act has undergone more than 4,000 amendments over the years, making the legal framework highly complex. According to him, this complexity frequently results in tax disputes due to varying interpretations of different provisions of the law.

The Income-tax Act, 2025, introduced several revisions aimed at simplifying the language used in tax laws and regulations. These changes are intended to improve clarity for both taxpayers and tax authorities, helping ensure a better understanding of the provisions by all stakeholders. According to Vivek Wadekar, as quoted in a recent PTI report, the revised framework is expected to support smoother compliance and more effective communication within the tax system.

Emphasis on Simplified Compliance and Digital Services

The Income Tax Department is continuously working to improve voluntary tax compliance while reducing disputes between taxpayers and tax authorities. As part of this effort, the department is introducing various digital initiatives and awareness programs aimed at enhancing communication, transparency, and understanding between taxpayers and the tax administration system.
  • As part of this initiative, the Income Tax Department has launched Kar Saathi, a 24/7 AI-powered chatbot designed to provide instant responses to taxpayers’ queries and improve user assistance.
  • Another initiative, Kar Setu, provides more than 2,000 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) along with educational brochures that explain the provisions of the new law in simple and easy-to-understand language.
  • To strengthen taxpayer outreach in Maharashtra, educational booklets related to tax exemptions and Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) have also been published in Marathi for better public understanding and accessibility.

Quicker Refunds and Reduced Communication Gaps

Vivek Wadekar stated that income tax refunds are now being processed automatically through the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru without any manual intervention, helping speed up the refund process and improve efficiency.

He also noted that complaints regarding high-pitched assessments often arise due to communication gaps, such as outdated email addresses or incorrect contact information provided by taxpayers.

He advised taxpayers to ensure that their contact information is properly updated to avoid discrepancies and maintain smooth communication with the Income Tax Department.

PRARAMBH 2026 Outreach Campaign Initiative

The Income Tax Department will organise a taxpayer outreach campaign under the PRARAMBH 2026 initiative across 23 districts in the Pune region to educate taxpayers and familiarise them with the provisions of the new income tax law.
