Ease of doing business for MSMEs: Filing Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns is required for all firms registered under GST, including those with nil returns, in order to disclose the income made from business activities. The GST return contains information on sales, purchases, tax collected on sales, and tax paid on purchases. The company's tax liability to the government is computed as per that.

Filing of monthly, quarterly, or annual returns as per the type of business is needed for GST-registered businesses. The business has a turnover exceeding Rs 5 cr and would require to file 25 returns in a year- two monthly returns (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B) and one annual return GSTR-9. Those with turnover below Rs 5 crore can opt for quarterly filing.

  • You should assure that you would secure a 15-digit GSTIN with you for filing the return. When you do not secure the same then you can tap on the link here and get that online. 
  • Once you have your GSTIN, go to gst.gov.in and click on ‘Services’ and then click on ‘Returns Dashboard’ 
  • Choose the fiscal year and file the return period through the drop-down menu.
  • Select the return to get filed and tap on ‘Prepare Online’ under Outward Supplies which has been incurred via the assessee.
  • Insert the needed information along with B2B invoices, B2C (large) invoices, credit and debit notes registered and unregistered types, and export invoices.
  • Fill in the additional information along with B2C (others), nil-rated items, or those exempted from the GST, the advances obtained for the supplies to be incurred in the forthcoming times, and information of the suppliers incur against advances obtained in the former tax duration, a summary of the outward supplies and documents issued. 
  • ‘Submit’ the form. Post submitting, the portal validates the data and highlights errors to be rectified.
  • File the return through the use of a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or the E-sign option

Download the GST Return File

  • Proceed to gst.gov.in and tap on 'Services' and then tap on 'Returns Dashboard'
  • Choose the financial year and the period of return filing from the drop-down menu
  • Select the return to get filed and tap on the prepare offline beneath the outward supplies made by the taxpayer
  • Proceed to download and tap on generate file
  • Choose the 'click here' link for downloading the zip file
  • Tap on the open beneath the open downloaded return file from the portal
